Ulster Museum, Belfast – BT9 5AB

February 27, 2011

I visited the Ulster Museum with the family just after Christmas and have to say i was impressed from the the start. Housed next to the botanical gardens the building is a mix of modern and classic and has a lovely open layout inside.

On entry we were given children’s map with stickers that you put on the map when you have seen specific exhibits, such as my boys favourite the big Triceratops skeleton. A great way to get the kids involved from the start.

Another highlight was the Art activities room, one of three learning zones inside the museum to keeping younger visitors engaged. You could play with mirrors, puzzles, drawing and also clothes to dress up a a Toby Jug :S

We had lunch in the cafeteria and the food was really good value and quality. They offered kids meals or just small portions of the adult food for those with a fussy palette. I enjoyed the lasagna, which came with chips that were stolen quickly.

The changing facilities we used were spacious and clean and had seating if you wanted to nurse too. 95% of the museum is pushchair friendly but like all old buildings there are always small areas where you may need to tackle a few steps or go around another way.

The obligatory trip to the shop meant we came home with a T-rex, Stegasaurus and two Ulster Museum drinking cups with built in straws. After leaving we quickly wandered into one of the hot houses which holds the tropical plants, but due to the grumps starting to appear we decided to call it a day.

All in all a fab day out and definitely on to recommend :)
